The Influence of Companion Animals on Emotional States

Some philosophical models, such as David Hawkins’ Map of Consciousness , propose that emotional and energetic states can be measured on a scale. In this framework, a dog’s wagging tail and a cat’s purr are said to “calibrate” at the level of unconditional love — a state Hawkins places at 500 on his scale. He suggested that only a small percentage of humans reach this level, while the majority exist in lower emotional states such as guilt, shame, grief, fear, anger, or pride.

Although this scale is not a scientifically validated measurement, the core idea reflects a widely recognised truth in animal-assisted therapy research: companion animals can have a profound calming and regulating effect on human emotional states. Through consistent, non-judgemental companionship, dogs and cats can promote feelings of safety, comfort, and emotional stability, supporting co-regulation between human and animal.
